I am the mom of a 9 year old self assured young lady. I embarked upon a search for a Karate School three years ago. I selected the Power of One because of the friendly and informative interaction I experienced during my initial visit. I feel blessed to be part of this family. The Van Deusen’s & Mr. Daniel’s embody ethics, compassions, strength, humility, a genuine sense of community and tremendous martial art skill. They are committed to teaching each and every student, no matter the age. The goal, as I understand it, is to build confident individuals who can protect themselves and make great contributions to humanity. N. Meldrum
Our son has a greater sense of integrity and pride since starting at the Power of One 20 months ago. Instructors recognize his accomplishments and reinforce positive behavior so that now, at just 8, he actively works to be promoted to the next level. Of course, the world-wide reputation of those instructors only motivates our son more. We were lucky to be referred to this studio. K. Surfus
The Power of One Studio continues to serve as an extremely
positive life changing experience for our entire family. The
opportunity to be taught and mentored by world Champions and
seasoned black belts is rare and rewarding, and further enhances the
impact of the lessons and instruction. This studio is unique in
offering such amazing role models who train and educate our children
for life’s challenging lessons. Moreover, The Power of One takes an
inspiring approach to engage and challenge each student mentally and
physically through a combination of rigorous training, stressing the
importance of academic achievement, assuming responsibility for
action or inaction, elevating self confidence, and promoting good
citizenship through respect, honesty and integrity. For over 3 years
this has been our first hand experience with The Power of One.

I am so happy and pleased with “The Power of One” and what they stand for. My daughter has grown so much in confidence and strength. The instructors are incredible and work so hard with all of the children. Thank you “Power of One”, we love you guys. A. Dishman
The Power of One has been a vital part of our child’s growth. The karate program has given our daughter confidence, discipline and valuable lessons that will last a lifetime. The trust we have for the instructors, is the level of trust you only have for family. D. Quinonez
Dear Power of One,
I wanted to thank you for all of the
contributions you have made to our son’s life. At age three, he was
diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder. He had significant
delays in his speech, difficulty with socialization and eye contact,
and he had frequent uncontrolled tantrums with destructive
behavior. The doctors and specialists had painted a rather grim
future for our son and told us he would always have social and
behavior problems and difficulty interacting with his peers.
He was immediately placed in special education
early intervention programs and started making significant progress.
With some hesitation a few months before his fourth birthday we
enrolled him in classes at Power of One. We were unsure in his
ability to pay attention during the class, follow directions, and to
interact with his peers but we thought he was up for the challenge.
His experience at Power of One has been more
than we could have hoped for. All the instructors and employees
have treated us like a member of their own family. They have the
utmost patience with our son, guiding and helping him not only in
the art of karate but in teaching him life skills. During class,
the instructors take their time with our son in order help him with
the physical skills of karate and the mental skills of group
learning, supporting his peers and primarily increasing his focus
and attention. Each class is filled with activities that help his
concentration and self confidence.
Now, after one year of training at Power of
One, our son is paying attention in class, following directions and
even demonstrating skills in front of the class. He is able to
answer questions that are asked of him and he has assissted other
kids to learn new skills. But even more significant he has taken
these skills and applied them to situations outside of class. Many
times when he is in a very heighten state leading to a tantrum he
will close his eyes and take deep breaths without being told to.
When asked what he is doing he replies he is taking “karate
breaths”. It is amazing to witness him taking control of his
behavior and turning what would usually result in an uncontrolled
crying and hitting fit, to a child with eyes closed taking deep
breaths and calming himself down.
Our son is now doing great in school and in
life and we attribute much of his success to his wonderful teachers
at Power of One Karate. He still has a number of challenges to
overcome but I feel that this training will help him in more ways
than he is aware. To him it is a fun activity that he gets to do,
but for us it is a place that he is learning skills that will help
him succeed in life. Thank you for all you have done for our son.

My kids have grown mentally strong and physically capable in dealing with difficult situations. They are comfortable here and wish they could come every day. E. Strahan
It is hard for people to understand how a martial arts studio can teach a child so much more than martial arts. Self Concept, respect for themselves and others, self discipline, perseverance, power of mind over body, integrity, teamwork, hard work, personal gratification, having positive role models, positive competition, physical fitness, physiological education, bonding with other adults and children that has a long lasting positive influence on them. To me, my children’s education at Po1 is as important as their education at school. School teaches them what they need to know and their education at Po1 teaches them how to live with integrity and physical fitness in the world. Not to mention they learn how to protect themselves and others. K. Nielsen
We would like to thank the Power of One Self-Defense Institute for helping boost Remington and Spencer’s self esteem and positive attitudes and making them better people! D. Cook
"Last summer, after several “requests” from my daughter to sign up
for karate, we walked into the Power of One Self-Defense studio. My
daughter has since punched, kicked and kiai’d her way to a second
degree yellow belt, developing her technique, confidence and
strength at the age of 6. Inspired by my daughter’s progress and the
instructors’ ability to teach and inspire children and adults alike,
I signed up, though not without any hesitation and doubts on what I
would be capable of doing.
At 32 years old, 5’9” (on a good day), and weighing 285lbs… I
entered my very first kickboxing cardio class. Walking onto the mat
I made my way into what I perceived as an inconspicuous little
corner. Scanning the room I noticed people of all shapes, sizes and
different levels of fitness. “Okay, here we go…” I thought as Mrs.
V. made her way to the front of the class.
“Start jumping in place…Okay! Jumping jacks!” she shouted.
“I remember those from P.E. in Junior high. No problem…” About 20
seconds later my legs were burning, my side hurt, I was gasping for
air like a flopping fish out of water, when my mind went to that
cheeseburger I had ate a couple of hours ago and cursed it
under my breath. The rest is a sweaty, queezy, blurry memory…oh yeah
and that cheeseburger hurled its revenge on me as a projectile
emesis after a round of 1-2 punches to a heavy bag. The b-line to
the restroom was the fastest I’d move that session. Three months
later, I’m hooked having lost 20lbs and feeling stronger. And in a
couple of days I’ll be testing for my Yellow Belt under the karate
training.
The instructors at the Power of One Institute are very friendly,
very supportive, very encouraging, and more inspiring than any gym
“trainer” could be. I’m still a big guy, looking more like Kung Fu
Panda than Bruce Lee, but with every session, every drop of sweat
earned, I become a stronger person physically, and mentally. This is
more fun than anything else I’ve tried. Every session is different.
It definitely beats the monotony of a treadmill. I don’t see myself
stopping anytime soon. "
